Safety Tips

Damaging underground services can have serious consequences such as:

  • Personal injury to you and others,
  • Loss of essential services, creating a safety risk for yourself and others, and/or
  • Expensive restoration costs and potential legal action against you

When digging, make sure to always dig around the marks, not on them. Some facilities may be buried at a shallow depth, and an unintended shovel thrust can bring you right back to square one - facing potentially dangerous and/or costly consequences.

Remember you must carefully hand dig to the depth of your excavation within one meter of locate markings, unless instructed differently by the facility owner. If you damage an underground line, please call the facility owner directly. Even a sheath or coating nick can cause corrosion which may lead to a future problem. Leave the excavation open until it has been inspected by a facility owner representative.
